Wednesday 11th October Headline:
'3 way tie at the top after first match of the new Winter Season’ The Jet sponsored Wednesday League had its first matches of the new Winter season this week, 11th October, and the featured You-tube live streamed match saw Court In The Act welcome the Parkway team. The Court team went into a 7-3 lead going into the final session of the night leaving Parkway in the unenviable position of needing all of the final 5 frames if they were to carve out a win. This wasn’t to be however with the Leagues ‘new boys’ repeating the same score-line of the first session of 4-1, which also included Terry Shaw confirming the win in the 11th and Ben Peppercorn achieving a ‘break & dish’ in the 14th giving the Court team overall a comfortable win in their debut season, which also sees them tie in first place in the league table. Final score: Court In The Act 11 – 4 Parkway Court Snapbacks took on PSL Aint Going Down and this was certainly a tale of the ‘break & dish’ with 4 being achieved overall - 2 to the Snapbacks via Jamie Stokes and Ian Fountain and honours going to Rob Mills for achieving both the remaining 2 for the PSL Team. Break & dish aside, although the Snapbacks just nicked the first session 3-2, they then breezed through the next 6 frames in a row with Jamie Stokes confirming the win in the 10th. Mick Priest and Rob Mills took 2 consolation frames in the last session for PSL but this ended as a relatively easy win for the Snapbacks seeing them tie at the top, at this very early stage of the season. Final score: Court Snapback 11 – 4 PSL Aint Going Down Borough Boys hosted Court At The Bar and by the 9th frame the Boys found themselves 7-2 down and with a mountain to climb. With the Boys then taking the 10th and 11th frames, was a comeback against all the odds on the cards? Sadly no because, At The Bar halted the Boys advance by taking the final 4 frames of the session, including Michael Harrison confirming the win in the 12th. With this being a debut season too for the Borough Boys, this also sees Court At The Bar ending the match tying in first place – plenty of time to go yet for both teams. Final score: Borough Boys 4 – 11 Court At The Bar Postie Yo-Yo’s took the short hop across to the Court Jesters and from the final placings of the end of the Summer League, this was effectively ‘top versus bottom’. The Jesters certainly started off with a ‘business as usual’ approach with Darren Hope completing a ‘break & dish’ in the 9th and Lee McShane confirming the win as early on as the 10th frame - Gordon Wilks and Kev Pike managing to take a frame a-piece for the YoYo’s, all by the end of the second session. Whilst the Jesters then took the first two frames of the final session, the YoYo’s rallied to then take the final 3 frames in a row leaving the Jesters with a win albeit not as damaging to the YoYo’s as might have been expected. Final score: Court Jesters 10 – 5 Postie Yoyo’s Court Gimme A Break took on the Court Young’uns and this was a much closer affair than all the other matches played out tonight. The highlight of the first session for the Young’uns, although they lost it 3-2, was Ben Baker completing a ‘break & dish’. In fact, the score-line of 3-2 was mirrored in the remaining two sessions with Gimme A Break just nicking them on all occasions – Grant Watson finally confirming the win as late on as the 13th frame. Final score: Court Gimme A Break 9 – 6 Court Young’uns Thursday 12th October Headline: ‘Cross Keys Silver set the early pace’ The Stanground Carpets & Flooring sponsored Thursday League also had its first matches of the new Winter season this week, 12th October, and while Cross Keys Silver’s opponents certainly didn’t have an easy ride overall, Court Fat Wanna Be Slim certainly take first prize for the most colourful and inventive team name! Back to the business at hand though, and Silver made no mistake in making their mark on the first game of the season and, although Wanna Be Slim’s Ewan Peacock and Nick Smith took two consolation frames in their team’s debut season within the PWR, this was a very comprehensive win overall for Silver, which included Mick Defraine confirming the win in the 10th, leaving them clear at the top of the table at this very early stage in proceedings. Final score: Cross Keys Silver 13 – 2 Court Fat Wanna Be Slim The featured You-tube live streamed match saw Court Larking About take on the Court Posties, and by the 10th frame the Posties were still in touch at only 6-4 down going into the final session. However, Larking About’s John Roe then confirmed the team win in the 12th with a ‘break & dish’ followed by a further two frames out of the last 3 for the Court team giving them a relatively easy ride over their opponents. Final score: Court Larking About 10 – 5 Court Posties Bluebell R Back welcomed the Quinns Muppets from the other side of the city and this turned into a journey well worth making for the Muppets. They just shaded each of the first two sessions 3-2 leaving the Bluebell team a not too big a mountain to climb if they were to get a home victory. It wasn’t to be though as the Muppets raised the bar even further by winning the last session 4-1 including Anthony Pask confirming the team win in the 12th - giving the Muppets a relatively easy victory over Bluebell. Final score: Bluebell R Back 5 – 10 Quinns Muppets Heron Warlords were hosts to the last of the debut teams for the Thursday league in this new winter season, the Court Legends and as the name suggests, there is more than just the odd decade or two of combined ‘playing years’ between the players in this particular team, and a fine start to their season they made too. Advantage went to the home team in the first session taking it 3-2 suggesting this was going to be a pretty close throughout however, never judge a book by its cover! The Legends then raised the bar by taking the next 6 frames in a row, including Nicky Parnell confirming the team win in the 11th frame but, although the match was already lost for the Warlords, they did halt the slide briefly with wins from Ian Lea and Graham Tilley making the overall results a little more respectable. Overall though this was a comfortable win in the end for the league’s new boys. Final score: Heron Warlords 5 – 10 Court Legends With Court Gold on their travels to PSL Lions, Gold were looking to carry on from where they left off at the end of the Summer League and make a bid for another league title in this Winter League and, by winning the first session 4-1, things were looking good. Paolo Batista did pull another frame back for the Lions but, Gold were soon on the charge again taking the next 4 frames in a row and along with it, the team win which was confirmed by Andy Bunton in the 10th. Paolo Batista and Martin Edgley took two further frames for the Lions in the final session but, Gold, in the end, breezed through to their first win of this new season with all eyes now firmly fixed on the boys currently at the top, Cross Keys Silver. Final score: PSL Lions 4 – 11 Court Gold All live stream matches can be viewed via PWR’s Facebook Page: Peterborough World Rules PWR.
